244. Mint and salted caramel ice cream in Alessi bowl (Minze- und gesalzenes Karamelleis in einer Alessi-Schale), 2025, Öl auf Leinwand, 15 × 20cm, (Darryn Ansted)

The ice cream paintings that were in my recent exhibition have now all been posted, and here is the first of the paintings that were not finished in time for the exhibition. Mint and caramel. When I paint these scoops of ice cream I sometimes feel glad that I have painted a few mountains in the past. A still life is ‘a landscape on a table’ after all, as Yael would say, quoting Morandi. It certainly felt like climbing a mountain at times.

Although I see the benefit of painting a bowl of ice cream au naturel, I like paintings that feel like they bring you exclusively close to paint, to oil paint, disarmingly close,. That is why this series is contrived. This paint-world is not really part of ordinary life.
